Overview

Tianmen Mountain sits directly above Zhangjiajie city, and the journey up is as much of an attraction as the summit. You’ll board the world’s longest high-mountain passenger cableway — 7.4 km, roughly 28 minutes. Which lifts you from the middle of town, over farmland and terraces, to a summit station at 1,500 metres.

FAq

Do I have to walk on the glass?
No. Both glass sections have a solid bypass path, and no part of the route requires walking on glass.
Is the cable car ever closed?
It can close in high winds, thunderstorms or heavy snow. If that happens, the operator uses the mountain road with shuttle buses, or you can rebook — we'll confirm on the day.
How fit do I need to be for the 999 steps?
The stairs are steep and take most people 20–30 minutes. The escalator tunnel is a full alternative and skips the climb entirely; several visitors on each departure use it.
Can this be combined with the National Forest Park?
Not in the same day, they're separate parks and each needs a full day. Many travellers do Tianmen Mountain the day before or after the Forest Park.
Is it suitable for people afraid of heights?
Partly. The cable car and cliff walkways are exposed by nature. The temple grounds, forest paths and Tianmen Cave are not, and your guide can route you around the most exposed sections.
